Music as a Tool of Manipulation

“There is nothing new under the sun” said Solomon around 920 years before Christ was born. He was right then and he’s right now. There is supposedly a “new” sound, a harmonic vibration of certain tones that are supposed to alter human perception and even our DNA. Some are linking it to an ancient chant used in the Catholic church which supposedly the monks used to bring down the presence of God and transform behaviour and mood.

One ancient chant to St John the Baptist was arranged in an early form of what we know as the musical scale of Do-Ray-Me (etc).  I imagine this was done to teach choristers the scales, since there was no written notation in those days. (Go to this page to find out about it).

Initially written by Paolo Diacono as a hymn to Saint John the Baptist (circa 720 – 799), the Latin words “Ut queant laxis, Resonare fibris, Mira gestorum, Famuli tuorum, Solve polluti, Labii reatum,” translate to:

UT — Ut queant laxis = So that your servants may

RE —    resonare fibris, = with loosened voices

MI —  Mira gestorum = resound the wonders

FA —    famuli tuorum = of your deeds

SO —  Solve polluti = clean the guilt from

LA —    labii reatum = our stained lips Sancte Iohannes. = O Saint John.

However, now the New Age has “rediscovered” the hymn and is claiming that each ascending note is a resonance that has meaning, in particular the “miracle” note of MI which has a harmonic frequency of 528. You can buy CDs of each frequency that are supposed to heal your body and release spiritual energy as you listen and chant them. I have no doubt this will also be linked to the rainbow colour spectrum and other pseudo-scientific claptrap so as to give it special spiritual meaning.

But will modern-day deluded Christians buy into the same nonsense? I think so.

Here are 22 quotes [in an article written in the mid 1990’s] taken directly from Christian and other literature, where in their own words they discuss the power and use of music to influence people. They are not only AWARE of the power of music but intend to employ its spiritual power to enslave listeners to their agenda.

(Ecclesiastes 1:9-11) What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun. Is there anything of which one can say, “Look! This is something new”? It was here already, long ago; it was here before our time.

  1. I’m not looking to get into any debates on this issue, but I just only thought that it may be a bit extreeme to lable something such as 528hz as being satanic. While I agree that many people use things that God created for evil purposes, I find it encouraging to know that there are those who’s intentions may be pure. Regarding the power of frequency, it is science. Surely Benjamin Franklin and Albert Einstien were considered as people who were in to witchcraft, because they were finding out how to harness an energy that many knew nothing of. The Bible does not talk about electricity, telephones, or the power of kenetic energy, but it all exists non the less. I think that there is wisdom to be found in thoroughly examining the evidence in any situation, before we throw the baby out with the bath water as so many do today. One particualr person by the name of Dr. Frank Garlock has written books on the power of music and beats. While I do not ascribe to most of Mr. Garlocks conclusions regarding music, I find the science of it relevent in many ways. Music, just like anything else God has created, is a tool that can be used for either good or for bad, but music in and of itself is not evil. God made ALL things and he called it GOOD. We should pray daily that God would give us the wisdom and discernment that He wants us to have, so that we are fully empowered to do all good works, and glorify Him. Some how they built the pyramids. If it was in fact done through a lost or “hidden” science, then the prudent thing to do would be to dedicate more research to finding out the Truth, even if it goes beyond our willingness to comprehend at times. God Himself may involve a faith factor, but HE IS none the less.
    I would like to see more evidence on the DNA repair that this freqency is purported to cause. However, just because I haven’t seen that evidence yet, doesn’t mean it isn’t there. Just food for thought from a fellow believer, who is a lover of ALL Truth, even if it isn’t always understood.

  2. No doubt music can be uplifting and inspiring or else it is the tool of the devil.

    Have you ever seen footage of the Beatles when they played their music in concerts? The people were going crazy! They had this glazed-over look in their eyes. Then look at footage of Adolf Hitler speaking to the German people in the 1930s: they had the same glazed-over look in their eyes–it looked like some Satanic trance.

    There is no doubt that Hitler operated under a Satanic anointing and the Beatles also operated under a Satanic anointing. Satan has influenced so many people through his music.

  3. Thanks for posting info about this Trish, people need to know. When i was looking into this subject it reminded me of a very similar eery concept, said to be sweeping the internet, mostly among teens. It is called, “i-dosing”.

    I-dosing also uses specific sound frequencies in order to simulate a “high” in the brain, or a “lost & empty state of mind”. Warnings have been sent out to parents by schools in many cities about the so called new activity, in which kids are using it to get high. The sound tracks sound almost identical to the 528 hz “love & healing” tracks, the only difference being the ambient noise which is mixed into the specific sound frequency, but the mood/mind altering harmonic frequencies are the same.
    I-dose tracks are named according to the effect they are supposed to have on the individual. Some of the name of the songs are: “Gates of Hades”, “Peyote”, “Cocaine”, “Marijuana”, “Acid”, “Hand of God”, “Out of Body”, “Sleeping Angel”, “Black Sunshine”. Ironically Both I-dosing & New Age 528 “healing” songs require the same “instructions” to be effective; You must be in a quiet place, and you must clear your mind. I-dosing is sinister & it does not promote itself as otherwise. 528 hz healing songs market themselves as “universal love” and “healing”, But they are both the same entity.
    Furthermore, this entity is now trying to slip it’s way into Christian music. I-dosing, 528 hz, & Theta music are marketed to a specific group of people, certainly not Christians. Unlike tainting the Christian music market with so called “new Christian music”, this entity is hijacking previously sacred Christian music, claiming it has some sort of significant connection with their New Age theology. One song in particular is “Ut queant laxis”, which you elaborated on Trish.
    But as you suggested to me earlier, we need to listen to our music as it was intended, and not for the purpose of altering minds & so on. It helps to be aware of the situation. And if there is some connection, so what, it is not important or it would have been elaborated on in scripture, and it is not for us to know. I think Psalm 131 sums it up best:
    Psalm 131
    A song of ascents. Of David.

    1 My heart is not proud, LORD,
    my eyes are not haughty;
    I do not concern myself with great matters
    or things too wonderful for me.
    2 But I have calmed and quieted myself,
    I am like a weaned child with its mother;
    like a weaned child I am content.

    3 Israel, put your hope in the LORD
    both now and forevermore.

    By the way, this is one of my favorite songs by “The Estonian Philharmonic Choir & Paul Hillier”, called “Zwei slawische Psalmen: Psalm 131”.
    Thanks again Trish, you have great blog.
