David Wilkerson’s last post: “it was no accident”.

WHEN ALL MEANS FAIL by David Wilkerson | April 27, 2011 (the same day he died in a tragic head-on collision)

To believe when all means fail is exceedingly pleasing to God and is most acceptable. Jesus said to Thomas, “You have believed because you have seen, but blessed are those that do believe and have not seen” (John 20:29).

Blessed are those who believe when there is no evidence of an answer to prayer—who trust beyond hope when all means have failed. Someone has come to the place of hopelessness—the end of hope—the end of all means.

A loved one is facing death and doctors give no hope. Death seems inevitable. Hope is gone. The miracle prayed for is not happening. That is when Satan’s hordes come to attack your mind with fear, anger, overwhelming questions: “Where is your God now? You prayed until you had no tears left. You fasted. You stood on promises. You trusted.”

Blasphemous thoughts will be injected into your mind: “Prayer failed. Faith failed. Don’t quit on God—just do not trust him anymore. It doesn’t pay!” Even questioning God’s existence will be injected into your mind. These have been the devices of Satan for centuries.

Some of the godliest men and women who ever lived were under such demonic attacks.

To those going through the valley and shadow of death, hear this word: Weeping will last through some dark, awful nights—and in that darkness you will soon hear the Father whisper, “I am with you. I cannot tell you why right now, but one day it will all make sense. You will see it was all part of my plan. It was no accident. It was no failure on your part. Hold fast. Let me embrace you in your hour of pain.”

Beloved, God has never failed to act but in goodness and love. When all means fail—his love prevails. Hold fast to your faith. Stand fast in his Word. There is no other hope in this world.

DAVID WILKERSON OBITUARY

Rev. David Wilkerson, founding pastor of New York City’s Times Square Church and author of the 1963 best-seller The Cross and the Switchblade, died Wednesday afternoon in a head-on traffic collision with an 18-wheeler in East Texas. He was 79.

Also injured in the crash on the Neches River bridge was Wilkerson’s wife, Gwendolyn Wilkerson, and another woman. A Texas Department of Public Safety representative said Wilkinson was not wearing a seatbelt.

The pastor’s death was confirmed by his family in a statement appearing on the Wilkerson’s World Challenge http://www.worldchallenge.org/ Web site. “We appreciate your prayers and our hearts are sorrowful, yet we rejoice at the joy of knowing David Wilkerson spent his life well,” the statement said.

The Cross and the Switchblade chronicled Wilkerson’s early years in New York City tending to drug addicts and gang members. It sold 15 million copies in 30 languages and was made into a 1970 movie starring Pat Boone (as Wilkinson) and Erik Estrada.

The second of four children born in Hammond, Ind., to Rev. Kenneth and Ann Wilkerson, the future minister was raised in Barnesboro, Pa., in a home “full of Bibles” and began preaching at 14. He was not allowed to go to movies, and only Christian music filtered through the family’s clapboard house.

“They called me Screechin’ Deacon,” Wilkinson told PEOPLE in 1989. He added that other children hassled him because he was skinny. “Later that did something for me in feeling for the oppressed.”

After high school, Wilkerson tried Bible college but dropped out because “it was boring. None of the other students were serious about the ministry.” In 1953 he married Gwen and took Pentecostal pastorates in Scottdale and Philipsburg, Pa. Then a 1957 LIFE story about a polio-stricken boy who was killed by gang members in New York changed his life. “I heard an inner voice say, ‘Go and try to reach those boys.’ ”

Moving to New York, Wilkerson started Teen Challenge, a drug, alcohol and evangelism outreach program that he ran for 14 years and expanded to 110 centers nationwide. In search of a wider ministry, he moved to Tyler, Texas, and founded a similar organization, called World Challenge (he was still its president at the time of his death), doing street ministries in New York in the summers. The sudden explosion of crack use brought him back to Manhattan full-time in 1987.

In addition to his wife, Wilkerson is survived by four children.

  1. I think it was an accident. To me, it sounds like he probably took of his jacket, because it was getting warm, and had to remove his seatbelt to do so. Thus, veering into traffic on accident.

    • David Wilkerson was the greatest prophet in the 20 th Century, his sermons still keep the saved balanced and hungering more of the truth he preached. I believe he was targeted because of his love for the truth and speaking out against the Joel Osteen/ Rick Warren Apostasy. The NWO wanted to destroy churches in America and around the world with lukewarm, entertainment , coffee houses, without the gospel . I believe the car accident was done on purpose , maybe the seat belt was broken or tampered with, did anyone investigate that? He preached the true gospel and we all will miss him and his love for the truth and holiness.

  2. very interesting comments.
Now, there is mention of “another woman” besides Gwen, the pastor’s wife…?
    Who is this other woman?
“Also injured in the crash on the Neches River bridge was Wilkerson’s wife, Gwendolyn Wilkerson, and another woman”
(the truck driver was a man; he was slightly injured)

      • with 2 other passengers in the car?? something is wrong with that supposition. He spends his whole life dedicated to helping others than deliberately drives into a truck with 2 others in the car??
Very strange to say the least. Who was that other woman in the car?

    • Meditating and praying love this I have come up believe that Rev. Wilkerson could have had a prophetic experience where the Lord revealed his own death to him. He then posted “It was no accident,” so THOSE that knew him would know his death was not a senseless accident. It was his time and our Lord took him home. Like when Jesus told Peter today you will deny me three times. Just my humble opinion.

      • Yes Carmen I totally agree, and had thought this too. ((with the school shooting of nikolas cruz I thought of nicky cruz and obviously David Wilkerson, If only mega churches were not taught prosperity preaching, but picking up the cross preaching, maybe there would have been a kind of man like David, in nikolas neighbourhood.)) when My mom passed on, the moment she did, a little wall clock in my home stopped at the same TIME her heart stopped ticking, when my husband saw it, pointed it out the next day, God’s Spirit quietly said as clear as a soft bell rung within my heart, “It was Her Time” = and It was David’s Time. The Odd way of his accident, were as if by his own hands, his death was taken; well it was by his own hands he always carried the cross of our Lord high. And just as he laid down his life with Christ, to win many conquering victories for our King, and His Kingdom; We always have to remember it says, we are more then conquerors, for we also ….. Romans 8 … By the last post David made on his blog, it does appear, he was wrestling with unanswered prayer in life, I’m assuming because the real answered prayer, was his own salvation was coming to the end of his temporary life here, so he could pick up his eternal life with his Lord and Saviour. Early 80s I had the wonderful opportunity to personally hear Nicky Cruz testimony, and meet him afterwards to hug him, and tell him I was so thankful he was no longer lost, but found.

  4. To be sure we should not make an idol of any preacher and David Wilkerson had his flaws like we all do ! Now that I am Torah observant I do not agree with all of his doctrines..However from a very young age he gave me a strong foundation of faith! And boldness! And compassion for the lost! So much that after reading his books as a teen I later on went to work for his ministry Teen Challenge and witnessed many captives set free and peoples lives radically changed including mine as s counselor! David was a weeping Jeremiah prophet and a John the Baptist rolled into one. He was extremely prophetic even about his own death. I believe when He said it was no accident t. That is exactly what the Spirit was saying!! I have no proof but he preached against the Illuminati and they have a habit of taking influential people out! Food for thot! We live in a world of Great Deception..Things are not always as they appear!! I look forward to greeting this man Of Abba some day and thanking him for helping me on my journey!

David did his best. His death is controversial. I love his sermons coz there are honest and genuine as he was here in this reality. 6. The cross and the switchblade changed my life. I read it to my young daughter in elementary school and she led two friends to Christ, something I hadn’t done in 35 years. After hearing of David Wilkerson’s death, years after he died, I began to listen to his sermons on you tube. Praying for strength to go on in a society that I no longer recognize to be used as a vessel along side other men of God. David Wilkerson inspires me.

I was living in a branch of the American Rescue Workers at the Hollidaysburg Pennsylvania Mission with Major Mary Fowler and 3 other volunteers. He is Home and we will him see ion when it is our time. May the Lord bless the family Wilkinson and Gary Wilkinson and I hope that he goes in Both Fathers footsteps. And that from God through Christ Jesus and his natural father David. We are praying for you all. May the Lord bless you. Amen.

Living in college Station Tx..I’ve actually shook Nicky Cruz’s hand at an event he spoke at ..S.O.S ministries . I realize that there really isn’t anymore preachers that have that fire and the passion I hear every time I hear one of His Sermons . though His Death appears to be tragic I believe God Is removing all His Annoited Because clearly the Gospel has taken a More Secular turn in this present Day.. I think God just brought him home because he was in so much anguish and look what he would have had to go thru now in these times. Look where his church is centered. Maybe God just had mercy on him and didnt want him to go thru this. ?? Either way I miss him

  9. I have been having a hard time finding a good Bible believing, founded, heart felt, spirit filled Pastor to watch on my cellphone or youtube. I do not have a church, Most are terribly apostate now. I came across the youtube channel End Time Sermons only weeks ago. I very much liked it. I was especially drawn to David Wilkerson because of his genuine heart, and pouring out of his very soul when preaching, even crying at times. He had so much truth and compassion in his heart. His sermons were like none that I have ever experienced. EVER! I was just listening to them all day, and then I had a favorite one titled “Are You Ready For the Return of Jesus?”, I listened to at night as I fell asleep. A few days ago it dawned on me that the original sermon date stopped in 2011, not the date posted on youtube, but other pastors sermon origin dates were 2015. It just hit me a few days ago, could this man be dead? I looked it up today on Christmas day 2015, a sad day for me anyway due to personal reasons. I was shellshocked to find out he died in 2011. I felt like a family member of mine had died. I am still not absorbing why God seems to be taking all the non-apostate preachers home, and leaving us with empty godless apostate gospel preachers. I know God has a plan, but I just still have trouble with it, and now learning the strange death reason. It is so hard to take. Perhaps Jesus is just at the door and is taking them first. I am only glad he left so many sermons, and now I am learning he was the one who wrote the book Cross and the Switchblade, a movie I saw years ago. I will revisit that, and read the book. What an amazing gift God leant us for a time. I intend to absorb everything he gave us. It was from God alone.

His sermons are available both on You Tube or Times Square Church’s website. He speaks with the same humility, the same authority, the same passion and the same annointing as the late Rev.Wilkerson. I think you would be blessed by his ministry.

  11. David Wilkerson was never in the ministry to make money. What a man of God. He had never met my husband and I, but meeting him at Times Square Church after service, he cleared out his whole schedule and spent a day with us, praying for us and giving us guidance in our lives. We had nothing to give, but tulips for his wife, who was home ill. The greatest advice from his own life experience was, GOD NEVER TOLD ME TO BUILD BUILDINGS. I SOLD THEM…I went back to the streets of New York. Oh thank you Brother Dave. We miss you, we miss your voice in the wilderness amongst all THE BUILDINGS BEING BUILT TODAY.

When Pastor Wilkerson left us to go to the Lord, I could imagine he would be most excited to meet the Lord whom he served with such wonderful dedication and zeal. So happy the Lord would also be to welcome His beloved servant home. However, he would be missed a lot by us in the Times Square Church and by all people all around the world whom he served preaching and sending messages by internet every day. May the Lord give peace and comfort to His family.”

  13. Myself, and several people I know all had the same experience when we read the headline of Wilkerson’s death. “The devil killed him.”
Many years ago, I heard two testimonies in succession. Both were people who suffered terribly in a car crash. Both said something like, “I always wear my seat belt. I never move the car without it. But, that day, I didn’t.” Speculation was that the devil got into their heads and willed them to not wear it. But, I thought differently, “The devil waited for an opportunity.”
    Always wear a seat belt!

    • Though this comment is from 2011, I agree 100%. This is my first time reading this last blog, as my heart yearned to read it after hearing people talk about it. I believe that in bold print is his message to us, and before you think I “flipped my lid” — I saw comments elsewhere (You Tube videos) where people said, “Oh I believe he committed suicide.” That GIANT manm this “General of God” commit a sin that God HATES most? Absolutely NO WAY!! I believe that there is more to “It was no accident” than meets the eye, and I will continue to pray that God will speak to me one day either with assurance that it was an accident, or tell me in His own way though the Holy Spirit what could possibly have truly happened. I read about the Ambien in his system. BAD news that drug that is though it DID help many with sleeplessness. Still in his system though to be detected after 24 hours thereabouts later? (I heard the accident was late at night – 10 PMish?) Maybe it’s my heart crying STILL, as I have not gotten over this brother’s passing. He’s given me more hope in the Lord that I ever began to have on my own. I love and miss you, brother David, and may the Holy Spirit one day reveal to one of us who love you, if or if not, in the end of it all, whether or not as your words say, “It was no accident.” I send my love to the Heavens, to David and to Gwen, and thank them again, for their contributions to this “ol” woman’s life. One who loved them both dearly though only through moving pictures, Sermons, and reading of their precious gifts to so many lives. I still listen to sermons regularly on You Tube and Sermon Index, they still get to me, and I still seek God’s face as much as ever – sometimes, more. Brother Dave has been a role model of sorts for me, older as I am, to seek the Lord’s face without ceasing. Every Sermon still touches me, but none so much as “A Time for Anguish.” A time I feel I am in listening to his Sermons and still wondering. Although he is now, at peace, with the Jesus He gave and entrusted all of himself and all he ever had with. May the Wilkerson family always know the appreciation some of us have for sharing their loved one, David, with us all. To God be the Glory, great things he hath done!

It’s very interesting that the comment areas for his YouTube articles are disabled, especially those prophesying a Quake for the U.S.. Find out who is trying to silence Dave’s warnings to the U.S. and you may discover who silenced him for good. It was not an accident.

    • Jonathan, in reading Pastor David’s paragraph it seems that he wrote, “It was no accident,” to convey the message that God is in control over all things— even tragic, difficult circumstances where we feel we are in “the valley of the shadow of death”. Pastor David was writing as though God were speaking, saying, “Don’t be afraid. I’ve got this. I’m over this. It hasn’t taken Me by surprise. I have allowed it for reasons you can’t understand right now, since My ways and thoughts come from a higher perspective than yours (see Isaiah 55:9), but you can trust Me.” Pastor David was saying that even when God seems distant and uninvolved, He is absolutely in charge, and though we don’t understand what has happened, God will comfort us in our distress.

I am astound to see the things that has happen since “Set The Trumpet to Thy Mouth” and the “The Visison and beyond” Just think if we could get that this message out to thousands that have a Ear to Hear! Its not hard to understand, Pastor David would often say you don’t have to be a prophet or a theologian to understand these things. Just Read the Word of God and the History of the of God’s word and how it repeats it self yet never contradict’s it’s self from Genisis to Revelations.

Then I bought “The Vision and Beyond” and sent a copy to Gordon Brown Prime Minister of England at the time, and received a reply acknowledging my gift. I do not know whether he read the book! Right now, I am searching for more copies of Dave’s book as would like to send one also to David Cameron, our current Prime Minister here in England. I am not having much success as cannot seem to get hold of anyone who knows where I could purchase several copies. Dave’s book actually prophesised what is happening at this moment regarding recession in the world and the violence experienced in London England during the last two or three days. I really believe God took Dave out of the world and into his arms, mainly in order to watch the final developments in this world from a heavenly viewpoint.

    • I recently found his messages on u-tube and I am one of many who have been touched by his ministry. I was raised in church and being 54 I have witnessed the churches evolve into the most un-godly places on earth. I have been compelled to live for Christ and I see what is transpiring all around me as the pastors of todays churches are leading their congregations to hell with lies and deceit. We live in a world that is now completely without limits, we live in the imagination instead of reality. In reality we must face the consequences of sin but in fantasy everything is okay. I am in anguish for the church and only DW was able to tell me what this was. I thought it was anger, I thought it was self-righteousness, I thought it was piety or a holier than thou attitude but my heart ache’s for those who are following these fake ministers who in private worship the devil. We need to wake up church. This is our fight and we cannot have victory when we are living like hell all week then coming to church on Sunday. We cannot compromise on eternity. We cannot live as pagans and expect to live in heaven someday. It doesn’t work that way. To love this world is to hate God and he truly deserves better than that. He deserves our faithfulness, He deserves our gratitude, He deserves our worship and it should manifest itself in every thing we do each day. If Christ lives in us then we SHOULD LOOK LIKE HIM. We have lost our ability to share the gospel because we look nothing like CHRIST!! One day we will stand before the Lord and answer for our perversion of the gospel of Jesus Christ because of how we lived.

  22. I very much love David Wilkerson and my heart is sick to have lost this voice that has meant so much to the Body of Christ. I do not read everyone one’s material but I do read DW’s messages for they are straight out of the Word of God. I just turned 49 in April and I have been reading DW’s books, pulpit series messages that were sent to my home free for over 30 yrs yes “Free for all”! His books were always affordable. I have so much knowledge I am told about God’s word and I credit to the Holy Ghost working through David Wilkerson and the ministry God had entrusted him with. This passage from 2nd Tim. 4:5 But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, and make full proof of thy ministry. comes to my heart as I reflect on Pastor David’s passing. One of the first books I read was “Set the Trumpet To Thy Mouth” My Lord the truths written in that book are still fresh on my mind. I am amazed of the times then when he wrote that book and then compare its contents to ToDay, oh how we as a nation “America” have waxed worst. I remember David saying other nations are just a sinful but we “America” were unlike nations, we are flooded with the Gospel, a church on every corner, gospel radio and tv stations and even bibles in every home. Its like we are jumping up and down in the Redeeming Blood of the Lamb and shaking our fist at God as to say we don’t need you any longer.
    2Ti 3:5
Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
    Rev 3:17
Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:
In Pastor David’s words you don’t have to be renowned prophet to see the inevitable. DW would say just read your Bible and look at the history thereof. If you take God the Father out of the equation we will self-destruct. But this I have learned from DW’s writings he would give you pure truth and always at the end of a sermon a word of Hope, an encouraging word to say turn to the Living God who is gracious, and merciful willing to forgive and heal. Father forgive me for being selfish for this man of God. Father yes David belongs more to You than to us. Another is taken, another Wycliff, Martin Luther, Tyndale, Livingstone, Finney, Moody, Spurgeon, Scofield, Billy Sunday, David Wilkerson.
    RIP Our dear Brother!

  23. It was approximately 1970 and a friend of mine had given me a copy of “The Cross and the Switchblade” to read. I had fallen away from the church and she was Catholic and involved with a Charismatic Prayer Group in Ann Arbor, MI. I was in Pharmacy School at the University Michigan at the time. I had been raised in a Christian family, attended a Lutheran church and even had gone to a Lutheran parochial school. I remember it as if it was yesterday. I was sitting in a conferance room of the 4th four of the pharmacy building when I had just finished reading the book. I put it down on the table and almost emmediately I experienced Christ in the room, almost as it seem he appeared to the desciples when Thomas was present. He didn’t say anything to me, he was just their. From that moment on I knew what direction my life would be going. It has never been the same since.

  24. I believe David Wilkerson’s passing away recently could be very prophetic. I used to read David Wilkerson’s newsletter back in the 1990s; he was a very prophetic preacher. I once hitchhiked from Iowa to New York in 1998 and visited Times Square Church on 51st and Broadway.

There is a lot of sin here in the United States. When people turn away from God, they become more socialist and marxist. Marxism is the opiate for the reprobate mind. We need to put God first in our lives; we need to seek the Kingdom of Heaven first.

In December of 2006, I had a dream about a Las Vegas Earthquake. This dream is on my blog, if you want to read it.

  25. Ever since being born from above in 1990 Pastor Wilkerson’s World Challenge Pulpit Series messages have been a source of teaching and encouragement for me. I always looked forward to receiving them. I will miss getting these messages penned from his hand. I never attended TSC or met Pastor Wilkerson but on that DAY David is going to be among the first I seek out to thank for serving Jesus and touching the life of a Christian he never knew existed. The world is going to be a little darker now without David’s voice and prayers.

  26. thank you, Jeff, for a bird’s eye view of what it was like to be at TSC. I believe many, many will turn to the Lord on Wilkerson’s passing. It is a marker for the body of Christ and the season that we are in. Romans 8:38-39

  27. Once a year, at least, I would suggest to the family, “hey, let’s go to New York City”! They all knew what I wanted to do. The big buildings, busyness and food are all fun, but they knew I wanted to go see Times Square Church. You must get there almost 2 hours in advance to get a good seat in the main room, since all the locals know how to save their seats for each other. So, we would sit in the former Broadway show theater (My Fair Lady began there), and wait as various members of Times Square Church lined across the front of the stage and quietly prayed. There might have been 25 people at any point standing along the front, praying. Then, seemly without any cue I could hear, they all moved silently away to their seats. Just as the hour changed to 10:00 AM, the curtains began lifting rapidly, with the stage lights on full, and the orchestra and choir began pounding away at a series of Christ centered praise songs. Everyone in the room was on their feet for the duration of the praise time. The words of the songs were flashed on a screen, so there was no excuse for anyone not to enter in. This was not a time of passive entertainment, either. The people were expected to join in, and they did. People: young, old, from over 100 nations. This was a deeply multi-cultural gathering.

Several times we were there when Dave Wilkerson spoke. That was the treat I always hoped for. In these last years he spent less time in New York. But, I recall one special morning, the last time I heard him. It was incredible. He gave his message, and then felt overhelmed at the moment, and he urged the people, all of them in the packed room, to remain silent. In a pentecostal church, there is usually an alter call, as there is every Sunday at TSC. People come down to the front from all over the building. He prayed for these people, and then he basically shooed them away. The room got terribly quiet, and Dave Wilkerson spoke quietly about the presence of the Spirit, and the need to be before Him, and then moved to the side of the stage and sat down. It got very quiet in the room. As this was all unscripted, the music leader was wondering if he should do something, and he moved close to his piano, and I saw DW actually wave him away from the piano, as if to say “Be quiet. Don’t do anything, don’t disrupt what is happening here right now”. As DW sat in his chair, we all sat quietly. Even though the room was full, and people standing in the back, it was absolutely quiet. No coughs, no murmurs. Nothing.

It ended after about 6 minutes, which is an incredible time period for a full house to be quiet. But, although, I didn’t understand all that was happening, I certainly believe that there was the presence of the Holy Spirit in a way that deals with people’s hearts and minds. What was accomplished that day, I don’t know, but I am sure something was. DW just got up walked over to the podium and dismissed the people. That was it. It was 3 years ago, and there may have been another song to end it, but it was a solemn occasion.

Times Square Church is my favorite mega-church. Probably the only mega-church I trust. They are good people, and it is because of the consistent, dedicated message that was preached there. The Church will continue, to the end.
