Who & What is the “Man of Sin”?

Over the years I have struggled to find an exact definition of what “Man of Sin” (or, Lawlessness) actually means. [2 Thess 2:3] I know who he will be, but the term used to describe him in Thessalonians seemed vague. Also, what exactly does it describe about his actions?

We understand what a “Man of God” is, or for example, a “Man of Many Talents”. Therefore I feel what is lacking is a more precise definition of SIN itself. What does this man epitomize, and what is sin?

Not Sin As We Know It

Many people instantly identify sin as breaking the Ten Commandments. That is, doing things like stealing, killing, lying. That, however, is too broad and doesn’t really describe the Man of Sin precisely. It leads to a dangerous misunderstanding, too.

What happens if he comes with deceptions that are so very attractive and seemingly “good” for mankind, that are not seen as sinful in the eyes of many? (The same passage in Thessalonians speaks of a POWERFUL DELUSION. 2 Thess 2:11)

We know that he will come claiming to be “a god” and eventually even to BE God.

In the untrained and unbiblical view of the world (and sadly, much of the Church today) there is nothing sinful or evil about having god-like powers and being able to offer spiritual renewal, miraculous deeds, longed-for revival and transformation both for humans and the earth itself.

You only need to see the same performance of the devil in the Garden of Eden to understand that sin is not necessarily murder, adultery, theft and obvious wrongs but rebellion against the will of God (for something that seems right and good, as did the fruit to Eve.)

So we learn that sin is anything that is contrary to the will of God. Good or evil! Both!

Whenever mankind thinks it knows best, and can solve its problems without having to follow the directions of God, it’s falling into the same rebellion that started this whole mess in the first place.

Endtimes Deception

Now we have come to a second Eden.

God says mankind and even the earth itself is heading towards disaster, but human beings are not ready to accept a higher call. They are determined to hang onto what they know and love at any cost.

To do so, they will have to rebel against God and adopt another savior, one who promises to deliver them from chaos and disaster. A god who comes with big plans for this world and for mankind, none of which entail worshipping the Lord of Heaven, the Creator.

Sin Epitomized

To return to the original question, who and what is the Man of Sin, he appears to epitomize all that is (falsely) good and acceptable, both spiritually and materially (for wasn’t the fruit in Eden freely available, beautiful and sweet to the taste? And “desirable to make one wise”).

The Man of Sin will not come to exalt openly depraved and corrupt behavior – even though his offer leads in that direction. No, he will come with an enticing and exciting program of restoration that will be almost impossible to resist.

Sin is Forgetting Who is God

Many today are proclaiming and demanding victory over evil but forgetting that evil is anything outside the will of God.

They long for a perfect world but think they can organize it themselves, if only they can persuade God to agree with them! But who is the Master, and who is the servant? Jesus said, you are my friends if you do what I command you. John 15:14

Matthew 7:21-23

Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name drive out demons and perform many miracles? Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you workers of lawlessness!”

There is that word, LAWLESSNESS, the alternative title of the Man of Sin.

Now I want you to consider the context of the word “lawlessness” – is it not that these people prophesied, did miracles, performed exorcisms and did many great things in the Name of Jesus, yet THIS is what the Lord described as lawlessness!

Lord, Lord, we did great miracles in your name! But Jesus says, who are you? You have not been my servants, but acted like the masters of the house, demanding that I obey you instead of the other way round.

What made you think I would be obliged to carry out your plans for the world? Is this not arrogance? What faith, what trust is this, if you did not submit yourselves to MY will but invented an alternative method of salvation that suited your better?

He says, you did not do my Father’s will. Having “good intentions” is not the plan of salvation, but trusting and heeding ME. You follow your own god, the Man of Lawlessness.

False Prophecy

Many are busily prophesying themselves into a plan of action for changing the world despite all that the bible says to the contrary. They want perfection and righteousness, so they assume that God must approve of almost ANY earthly plan to achieve that.

Insisting that God does what they want, they bludgeon the doors of Heaven and demand God fall in with The Plan. They are no longer obedient servants, but overbearing masters insisting on their own way.

As time goes by and they don’t get what they want, they will hunger for another more compliant savior, one who does not mind making false promises, or inspiring outlandish prophecies, all in the name of renewal, revival and restoration. Global Glory! (But whose glory?)

Global Glory? Or Global Delusion?

The Man of Sin epitomizes sin, yes, but not in the way most people think of sin.

His sin will be pure rebellion against the declared will of God for the Church, the world, and all that it contains. Even today his message goes out over the internet and in many church meetings, when men and women powerfully proclaim their own ideas of changing the world, instead of warning mankind to “flee from the wrath to come”.

Eventually their Head, their Champion, will jump on the bandwagon they are creating for him, and bring to a tumultuous climax all the ideas he’s been inspiring.

Then, the persecution Jesus warned us about will begin, for all who resist.

    • “as for “kingdom work” freedom allows that; now freedoms are disappearing;”

And how has that freedom been utilised?
For the most part it hasn’t – it has been squandered.

I’ll repeat the quote I gave earlier.

“I would rather see millions of [Iranians] come to Jesus than have freedom and democracy. If freedom was such a great thing for the Kingdom, then why is America and Europe in the state it is now?”

And for your other comments about Trump’s “achievements” – well I choose not to waste time addressing those claims.

      Trump’s wall.
I couldn’t find the video I’ve seen before where a group were climbing back and forth over the wall to show how ‘impregnable’ it isn’t.

  1. did not say “enabled by Trump”; did say “Trump allowed”; he stood with Israel; stood tall for the unborn; stood against illegal immigration; built a wall to keep illegals out. Personally I like Trump because of how he ran his country—America first. Isn’t that what any nation’s leader is to do?
Donald J Trump—-the greatest U.S. president in the last 100 years.
Trump was not the nations’s pastor; lets just give the man some credit. He knocked himself out for the country for 4 years, and didn’t take a dime for it. And here it seems the boy king still gets a “pass”!

  2. Never having met anyone who “deifies” Trump, may I say that the “demonization” of Trump bothers me a lot more. Trump did much to allow believers to effectively do kingdom work, and also to slow down the onslaught of wickedness. He was outstanding, and especially when the alternative in 2016 is considered. His 4 years were a reprieve which only God orchestrated. What the U.S. now has
would have begun 4 years earlier without Trump. In Canada, we’re already “bought &paid for”.

      Hi Dennis,

It seems haven’t seen the YouTube channels of various Trump promoting false prophets, and particularly the comments they inspire from their followers.

Apart from Trump being proclaimed as a modern day Cyrus, King David, Moses – and even compared to Queen Esther (‘for a times such as this’) – he’s been described as the chosen one, God’s anointed, and I’ve even seen it stated that ‘Trump is love’.

Personally I don’t have any interest in who is in the White House, but I DO have a great concern over the way Trump is being seen as a saviour figure by so many US ‘evangelicals’. I would have the same concerns about any professing Christian putting so much faith in any other politician.

The Trump phenomenon is merely a symptom of a wider, very serious situation – and that is the creation of an unholy hybrid religion mixing Christianity with nationalism. The Trump devoted ‘prophets’ are ALL promoting a nationalist agenda that has nothing in common with God’s gospel of HIS Kingdom.

The believers who are doing the most effective ‘Kingdom work’ are not those in the US, enabled by Trump. They are the underground delivers in China and Iran where their governments are aggressively opposed to the gospel – and yet the gospel is spreading and being embraced to a degree never experienced in our ‘free west’.

I’ve often shared this quote, which I believe is one of the most astute brief commentaries on western Christendom that I’ve seen recently. I think it should REALLY challenge us to deeply consider where our personal priorities are – I have found it profoundly challenging.

“I would rather see millions of [Iranians] come to Jesus than have freedom and democracy. If freedom was such a great thing for the Kingdom, then why is America and Europe in the state it is now?”

      • “What did Trump do that allowed Kingdom work?”

        A good question.
It seems to me that ‘Kingdom work’ is often most effective when political conditions are openly LESS favourable to the gospel. When politics is seen as being favourable to the gospel, all manner of compromise dilutes or alters the gospel message and the demonstration of it.

I find that the ‘evangelical’ connection to Trump has been more of a hindrance to true “Kingdom work” – the kingdom his ‘prophetic’ supporters are promoting has nothing to do with God, but is all about nationalism and protecting a mythical covenant between America and God.

See the video shared on my blog here:

        Mishandling the Prophetic

It’s a long video but the first parts about Hank Kunneman and Kat Kerr are the most significant and highlight the nationalist delusion being promoted by them and the cadre of false prophets of which they are part.

    • The article didn’t mention Trump, nor spoke of those who deify him, so I assume you are reading that into the content – which is a rather interesting fact in itself. The article was about the false prophets and their insistence on global revival, which is the very rebellion against God’s will that Jesus names as “lawlessness”, also the title of the Man of Sin. It is true, of course, that these same false prophets also elevate Donald Trump to a role many might think is god-like, and believe he is their leader in their mistaken campaign for world purification. Whereas in fact, Trump is too occupied playing golf and trying to avoid impeachment for inciting the Capitol riot to bother with those he called “low class” criminals.

    • Hi Dennis. I personally am not stating in any way that Trump did not certainly do some positive things while he was president. I would have loved to have seen some similar legislation happen here in Canada, beyond a doubt. Trump did appear to be pushing back on “social evils”, showing support for Israel, and Taiwan etc.. However, Trump is a sinful human being. Just as we all are. He is not divine. He was certainly aware that a growing number of people (especially a lot of people who call themselves Christian) were making him into a cult hero and even proclaiming him to be a form of a messiah. If he was a man who truly feared God and had any character, he would have spoken out loudly to discourage this. From all that I have seen, he did not make any effort to discourage this. You need to listen to what a lot of so called prophets in the New Apostolic Reformation movement and some other charismatic groups were saying about him. They were speaking of him as if he was a second Jesus Christ. This should not be acceptable to anyone who calls themself a truly born again Christian. While I would love to see politicians start making more moral decisions and standing for what we have traditionally felt is just and right. For the most part that has not happened in many decades, and is likely to not happen again. That does not mean, even if there is such an individual in politics who would do such things that are right, that we should idolize them, or worship them. It grieves me to see the free nations of the world start turning to socialism and all its evils with adoring eyes. However, our battle in this time as Christians is not to be focused on politics or social issues. Yes, I think we all dread the thought of communism becoming the norm. But we are in a time in history that the bible warned about over and over. A time of great deception, perplexity among the nations, chaos and social and political turmoil. What does all this mean? It means that Jesus Christ is returning soon and we have to get ourselves in shape spiritually, mentally and emotionally to do spiritual battle. What is happening in the U.S. and Canada and the world, is because of the fact we have turned our backs on God and putting our trust and hope in Him and His word alone. God will not share the praise with any man, or demonic presence no matter what side of the political fence they claim to be on. Even Satan himself can appear as an angel of light if it furthers his agenda.
(2 Corinthians 11:13-15) “For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. {14} And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. {15} Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.”
As Christians, we can watch what is happening in the world around us in these times. We may feel our emotions being “tugged” on as in the flesh we may want to get drawn into the political chaos and do battle. But if we allow ourselves to do that, does that mean that Christians on the “right” would be unable to witness to those on the left and share the gospel? Or, Christians on the “left” would not be able to share the gospel with a right wing patriot? Would Jesus Christ want us to be drawn into that situation? If you read the bible, the number one goal of the apostles, and of Jesus Himself was to reach the spiritually lost and dying, to do the will of the Father. That has to be our goal and desire.

Jesus could have easily pronounced Himself king of the Jews when He was here two thousand years ago, and destroyed the Roman Empire. He could have taken on the political battle and won. But then billions would have gone to hell without a savior. This world is going to decay more and more until Jesus returns to set up His kingdom. Left or right wing politics are not going to stop this world from embracing the Anti-Christ. But the gospel of Jesus Christ, the word of God, and Christ Himself CAN rescue people out of the clutches of Satan operating through the Anti-Christ, and Christ WILL return to obliterate the evil, and corruption and wickedness in this world that turns our stomachs. The bible says that Lot was “vexed”, or troubled, continually over what he saw and heard in Sodom. But he kept his faith in God and feared God more than man.
So you see, we are not attacking the “patriots”, or the “right”. I too would love to see Canada go back to being the Canada I remember as a younger boy. But of course it was never perfect. Neither was the U.S. at its best. However I do believe our countries will be great nations one day. But only after Jesus Christ returns and sets up His reign and His government during the thousand year reign He will bring about when He returns. As Christians our loyalty, our first love, and our primary devotion must be to Jesus Christ and His call. We have to be wise and be on guard to not let ourselves to be drawn to put this love and devotion in anything, or anyone else, more than Christ. Anything, or anyone that lures us to do so is a trap we must avoid.
Persecution of true Christians is not far off in our western society. One political party or another may able to stave off the persecution for a short time, but it will come. And if those political parties do hold back the persecution for a time, it will only be because God in His mercy moved them to hold it back.
The world is too far gone at this point to try to redeem by way of a political party, or any social or political movement or organization, or any well founded philosophy. The world elite, and groups such as the Jesuits and others have brought a depth of corruption, perversion and evil in the world as a whole that is too deep and broad to overcome in the flesh. It is a spiritual battle that requires spiritual weapons. It will only continue until the King of Kings returns to shut them down for ever.
(Ephesians 6:10-18) “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. {11} Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. {12} For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. {13} Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. {14} Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; {15} And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; {16} Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. {17} And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: {18} Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;”

  5. Good post Tricia. There are others suggesting similar concepts of how the Man Of Sin will be embraced by the church (the apostate false church). They will in turn see real born again Christians as the threat, instead of the demonic Anti-Christ leader and system. So those who proclaim to be Christians now could be the ones “turning in” real Christians to the authorities. It could be part of that turning on the real church will be at least partially inspired within those who feel betrayed when the pre-trib rapture doesn’t happen when expected. That they are not given a free pass on the coming persecution and hardships.
(Matthew 24:9-12) “Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name’s sake. {10} And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another. {11} And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. {12} And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.”.
Not sure if you have heard of onpointpreparedness. He does have some good and thoughtful information. I am not sure if I agree with his interpretation of using “the falling away” in II Thess 2:3 as the great rebellion as other versions of the bible describe it. But he has posted some interesting stuff.
Thanks Tricia. Take care and God bless.

I think the eagerness that so many professing believers became devoted to Donald Trump, who I see as A man of lawlessness, demonstrates how easily many professing believers will devote themselves to THE man of lawlessness when he appears.

The way so many are sticking by the ‘prophets’ who STILL insist Trump is the legitimate president reinforces that.
And the toxic response to anyone who questions their avid devotion is a strong indication of what you say about response to real born again Christians.

      • There is certainly spiritual deception involved in the shocking worship of Trump. I was somewhat caught off guard at how deep this deception was. I don’t listen at all to the “prophets” or “profits” whichever you want to call them. I knew there was darkness in the NAR movement. But I was taken back by the number of those who, say they are followers of Jesus Christ, that were so sold out on the concept of Trump as a form of savior. I am becoming more convinced that the whole “right VS left ” struggle is being used in a diabolical way by Satan. There is certainly evil on the left. I feel that is obvious. The “left” is no longer liberal, it is socialist to the hilt. Meanwhile the “right” has its own dark underlying agenda. They both will lead to the One World Anti-Christ system. They will just take different paths to get there. In Canada you see this happening with things such as Bill C6 which is quickly working through the parliament in Ottawa. Both “liberal” & “conservative” are in almost 100% support of this dangerous bill. Then there is the fact they are currently randomly taking people into custody at major airports in Canada without warning, or notice to family. Sending them to “holding” centers in hotels. If they authorities deem it necessary, these people could be moved elsewhere to unknown locations for prolonged periods of time, or even put under arrest by the police and incarcerated indefinitely. There was a government tender on the federal governments website roughly two months ago looking for contractor bids to provide food and water, and security for “camp” locations where it may be necessary to keep citizens for prolonged periods. Both “left” & “right” are totally in favor of this threat of arrest without trial that is becoming acceptable. All for what the government claims is for the “safety” of citizens. I do recall Eisenhower and I believe JFK warning of those who would strip away our freedoms in the name of “safety & security”. So it has already begun, but will undoubtedly become more focused on Christians, (which our Prime Minister has openly stated are the “most dangerous” people in Canadian society.) in time. This statement of his was easily found with a google search a year or more ago. But today is very difficult to find as the internet becomes “cleansed”. I have heard some Christians say independently over the internet that they feel we are already in the One World System. I would have to agree with that at this point. We are just waiting for the Man of Sin to be revealed. So I say all this to make the point that politics is a diversion, a trap, and I think part of the strong delusion that the bible warned about in the last days. All political parties and leaders are under the control of this “system” to one degree or another. Those who are not, will be and are being, threatened, blackmailed, or ostracized. I used to believe in voting as part of being a good citizen and as a conscientious Christian exercising my freedoms to carefully choose those who will be in power politically. I am increasingly feeling that “my vote” is wasted when whatever party you vote for will bring about the same outcome of evil. (Luke 21:28-31) “And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh. {29} And he spake to them a parable; Behold the fig tree, and all the trees; {30} When they now shoot forth, ye see and know of your own selves that summer is now nigh at hand. {31} So likewise ye, when ye see these things come to pass, know ye that the kingdom of God is nigh at hand.”
Our only hope is in Jesus Christ. He alone will bring true justice, mercy, righteousness, and judgement when He rules and reigns. Hallelujah! “Even so, come Lord Jesus” Rev 22:20

      • ” I am becoming more convinced that the whole “right VS left ” struggle is being used in a diabolical way by Satan. ”

Yes, political labelling and identifying with one ‘wing’ or the other is at best a distraction – or at worst a deliberate ruse of the enemy to draw believers completely away from the gospel and God’s Kingdom.

With Christians, especially in the (US where the spirit of Joseph McCarthy remains alive and active) they are drawing closer to right wing politics than they are to the LORD’s work. I suspect the increasing focus on ‘the left’ being the enemy could be a ‘sleight of hand’ tactic which will allow the real danger to erupt from ‘the right’ in a form that will be readily embraced by many professing believers.
